Classroom library

Since our school doesn't have a library, I was under a great deal of pressure to have an amazing classroom library, to expose my kids to a wide variety of reading material.  Luckily, throughout my internship and two years of teaching experience, I have managed to get my hands on a great deal of books.  It's funny, when I was starting out, I was thinking, oh my gosh, its going to be impossible to get so many books to fill my classroom!  But really, I felt like they just sort of fell into my lap!

Anyway, I wanted to organize my books in a way that supported my students of learning the skill of choosing their own level of book.  All too often you wander into a classroom where all of the books are already leveled, and the child does no work in choosing a just right fit book.  He goes over to the "J" basket, looks through it, and takes whatever one that looks the most interesting.  Well unfortunately, life doesn't really work like that in the real world.  Libraries do not have leveled books; it is up to the reader to decide if they can understand the words and meaning.  Same for bookstores, garage sales, etc.  I want finding a just right fit book to be something that is automatic.  It will take practice, sure.  But somewhere in there, they will learn the confidence to walk into any place with books, open one up, and decide for themselves whether or not it is suitable for them.

I ended up just going through my mountains of books and throwing them into piles.  A pile for bugs, a pile for space, a pile for Clifford, Arthur, Dr. Seuss- I had so many piles!  But when I was done, it felt like a much more organized space than just putting them into crates, like I see some teachers doing.  I did end up actually throwing in my leveled books from Journeys just so that I could know what level they were really reading at.  (They like knowing what level they are at too!) I kept them in separate containers from the other books though.

As I had said previously, my room was so small that I needed to really be careful of how my library was set up.  I had so many books that I needed a lot of room, but didn't exactly have the room for it.  I had an idea to set up my library like a book store, with "isles" for convenient and space saving shopping.  Here are my "isles" from a side view.

The top bins hold the Journey's leveled readers.  They go from A to L.  Under those are the categories of books.  I got those book bins from the Dollar Tree!

I ended up having some books that I didn't know how to categorize.  I put them in that crate.  Still not sure what to do with them, but they are still available for book shopping.

No doubt, all these categories and book bins would be really confusing for any teacher, much less a first grader.  But I created a management system for these books so that all kids can put these books back where they belong EVERY TIME.  I put a colorful garage sale sticker (just the little circle one) on the back of all the books, then covered it up with tape.  Then I wrote a number on each one that corresponds to which book bin it belongs in.  I wrote the number OVER the tape because, if need be down the line, you can get the marker off the tape to assign it a new number.  (Color over it with white board marker, and it wipes right off!)  Now at this point of the year (March) the numbers are starting to come off the books, but by now, everybody can guess where each book belongs.  I'll have to go back and rewrite some of the numbers though... =/

Now, as for categories, I wanted to give my kids something to look at when shopping for books.  A sort of reference for all the categories of books that I had.  I came up with this list that I posted inside the library in both isles.

All in all, I have 36 categories.  I catch my kids standing there, just looking at this list, thinking of the possibilities!  I love it.

The room

OH WOW.  Hello!

Needless to say I've been a busy bee since August.  And I'm not the best at keeping up with blogs.  But here I am at last to post pictures of my room.

It all started because my room is so small, remember?  Well, I couldn't possibly fit 20 desks in there and keep myself sane.  (I hate the visual "noise" of all those metal legs, not to mention a bazillion things to trip over and maneuver around all day).  So I began with a simple idea of three tables.  Two at normal first grade height, and one with the legs taken off.

Here they are. Not too beautiful yet, but I like the different levels.  Adds some dimension.

Next I added our big rainbow table and our bucket chairs. (Don't mind the mess!)

I got five heavy duty buckets from the Home Depot.  It actually worked out perfectly, because all of the manipulatives for our math program fit in them.  Which is amazing, because I literally don't have room for them anywhere else... :)

Next I made my library.  Now I consider this to by a real work of art.  Since I am so cramped for space, I needed to condense my library into the smallest space possible.  I ended up making it like this with two "isles" for easy and efficient book shopping.

I use the Journeys Leveled Readers on top (they go from A to L in my room), then everything underneath it is categories of interest.  To see how I categorized my books, see my library post.

After that, it was really just about adding the actual seating.  I got my exercise balls for one of the big tables, regular chairs for the other one, then for the little table I filled a body pillow with a BUNCH of bubble wrap.

And since you are wondering, no, the bubble wrap does not pop when they sit on it.... but it does make noise when they move around on it.  They seem to like the noise, and it doesn't drive me crazy. Win-win!

Last Year

I guess I went MIA last year for... the whole year, but I took pictures of my classroom, and I would like to share them now.

Here was my room at the VERY beginning of the year.  You can't really tell from this picture, but most of those desks are the double wides.  Then some of them are normal (on the left side).  I didn't even have enough desks for  the amount of kids that I would be having.  I had 29 desks, but was getting 32 kids.  Notice the small table up there?  That was my solution.

Here is my reading rug area (although I didn't have a rug over there until a few weeks into school year.)  From here you can see my easel, my stuffed monkey, Markle Sparkle, my library, my calendar, all about me board, white boards, erasers, phonics phones, Journeys instructional cards and a weird hundreds chart (I won't be using that again).

My library and my Workshop Way philosophy signs (see my Workshop Way post).

Another look at my reading rug area.  Notice the large black couch cushion... great for this year's alternative seating!
Here's my word wall... I got the cute zoo themed alphabet sign from Teachers Notebook.

My 'days of school place value board'.  Got the little holders from the Dollar Tree and just stapled them into the wall!

My wonderful library!  (They don't all have labels yet)

I love this!  I took all of my teaching resource books and put them in a bunch of magazine holders from Ikea.  Then made little labels and put a strip of contact paper across the whole thing.  Only... now as I have had to move rooms this year, the thing does not move well as one giant piece.  I wish I would have just wrapped them individually with contact paper.  Oh well, live and let learn.

Workshop Way puzzles and Thinkers, as well as a puzzle and Thinker lost and found and a book hospital!

This thing is nifty for centers or little activities.  The red cup on top holds like 25 sticks for the "What to do when you are done" problem.  I tell them to "pick a stick" and each stick coincides with a bin.  They take it back to their seats and  complete the activity quietly.  The blue mailbox on top holds Risk Sheets, 5 Across pages, and other Workshop Way tasks.

I set this up later in the year for supplies.  On top you will see The Prince (our pencil sharpener under the blue bucket... it says "Shh!  The Prince is sleeping!) and little containers for spelling words and word wall words.

Finally, I got rid of all the double wide desks and got normal ones!  Not to mention the fact that I lost a lot of kids and ended up with 24!  I put them into groups of four and put the supplies in the middle.  The teams got to pick out the animal team name, and each team was awarded points for appropriate behavior.  Each week the winning team got a trophy to sit at their desks for a whole day and they got to do "window paints" on one of my giant windows.  Quite the crowd pleaser.

Anyway, that was my room last year.  This year it will be very different because there will be NO DESKS!!  I will be doing alternative seating!  Check out my other posts to see how things are progressing!
